Nuvema Town

The game begins with an introduction to Professor Juniper of the Unova region. You'll then be able to select your name and gender. Your two rivals will also be introduced, Cheren and Bianca. You'll then find yourself in your room in Nuvema Town with those two and a present from the Professor containing three choices for a starter Pokémon. There's the Grass-type Snivy, the Fire-type Tepig, and the Water-type Oshawott. Once you choose, Bianca will take the Pokémon that is weak to yours and Cheren will take the Pokémon that is strong against yours.

You'll then have your first Pokémon battle against Bianca right here in your room. Refer to the above table to see which Lv. 5 Pokémon she will have. You should be able to get through by just using your only damage dealing move. After the battle, you'll find your room completely destroyed. You'll then be healed and on to your second battle with Cheren, who will also have a Lv. 5 Pokémon as determined above.

After defeating both of your rivals in battle, head downstairs to see your mother. She will forgive you for the mess and give you the Xtransceiver. This device lets you have calls with multiple in-game characters at the same time. Your mother then sends you off to see Professor Juniper. Once outside, follow Bianca down to her house on the left. Inside you'll see Bianca's father telling her off and not approving this whole Pokémon adventure thing.

Head back outside and head north to the lab. Inside Professor Juniper will explain the nature of your adventure to catch and document all of the Pokémon in the Unova region, and she'll give you the Pokédex to do so. Head back outside and your mom will be waiting to give you all a Town Map. She'll wish you luck and send you off once again.

Route 1

Follow Cheren and Bianca north to Route 1. Here Professor Juniper will show you how to catch a Pokémon. She'll also give you 5 Poké Balls. Everyone will then set off for Accumula Town, and Bianca issues a challenge to see who can catch the most Pokémon along the way. Continue north on Route 1 then, catching Pokémon along the way if you'd like. You can get a Potion from the girl with black hair.

Accumula Town

Continue along the route and you'll soon run in to Cheren and Bianca again, who have two Pokémon each. You'll also get a Xtransceiver call with Professor Juniper telling you to meet her at the Pokémon Center in Accumula Town. It's just ahead and to the right. She'll give you a quick tour, the main thing of note being that Poké Marts are inside Pokémon Centers in this game. The professor then sends you on your way with the advice to look out for an inventor named Fennel in Striaton City.

Back outside, it seems that there is something going on at the plaza. Here you'll be introduced to the leader of Team Plasma, who makes some rather compelling arguments for Pokémon liberation. Afterward you'll meet the mysterious N who will challenge you to a battle. He has a Lv. 7 Purrloin. After you defeat him N will run off and Cheren will head to the next city to start tackling the gyms. The only thing left to do here is get a free Poké Ball from a man on the top floor of the northwest building.

Route 2

Head west onto Route 2 when you are ready. You'll quickly get an Xtransceiver call from your mom. This won't last long though, as she'll quickly meet you where you are to give you the Running Shoes. You can now hold "B" to run. Head forward through the tall grass and pick up a Potion along the way. There are a couple trainers along the route, you can always hop over the ledge and head back to the Pokémon Center to heal up if you need to.

There's a total of three trainers that you can battle on this route. Once you near the end of the route, you can take the stairs to the right to find a Potion and a Poké Ball. When you try to the leave the route to the north, Bianca will stop you for a battle. She has a Lv. 6 Lillipup and a Lv. 7 starter. You'll have the type advantage with your starter, so you should be able to take her out. Afterward you can head north into Striaton City.

Striaton City

You can take the small path to the left from the city entrance to find a X Speed. You can also get a Great Ball by speaking to the lady in the first house to the right. Then heal up if you need to and then check out the Trainer School to the left of the Pokémon Center. You can speak to the brown haired kid here and take his status condition quiz to get a Full Heal.

You'll find Cheren at the back of the Trainer School and he'll challenge you to a battle when you speak to him. He has a Lv. 8 starter and a Lv. 8 Purrloin. This battle can be a little tricky if you've only been training your starter since he'll have the type advantage, so you might want to spend some time leveling up another Pokémon first. After defeating Cheren he'll give you 3 Oran Berries.

You'll next want to head for the Dreamyard to the east of town. This is area where trainers go to prepare for the upcoming gym battle. After defeating the two trainers here pick up the nearby X Defend. Then speak to the black haired girl. She will offer to give you a free Pokémon that will help cover your type weakness for the upcoming gym battle. This will be either Pansage, Pansear, or Panpour. Check the table below to see what you'll get.

Striaton Gym

The next thing to do is take on the first gym. You'll want to make sure your Pokémon are around Lv. 12 or higher before going in, especially your newly gifted Pokémon, so you may need to train up on Route 2. The gym is the building to the right of the Pokémon Center. When you enter, the guide will give you a Fresh Water. He'll also explain that the puzzle in this gym is choosing the type that is super effective against the type shown on the curtain (Grass > Water, Fire > Grass, Water > Fire).

Answer the first question for a battle against Waiter Maxwell and his Lv. 11 Lillipup. Proceed through the next curtain for a battle against Waitress Tia and her Lv. 10 Patrat. There is one more curtain between you and the gym leader. The key to this gym is that you'll face a different gym leader depending on the starter you chose. The gym leader will always have the type advantage against your starter, which is why picking up your Pansage/Pansear/Panpour is so important.
